Etched into Memory focuses on the form of intaglio printmaking and its connection to concepts of memory. Through these processes, the artists are able to explore concepts of loss, family and collective histories, and the persistence of memory.

Curatorial Statement:

Etched into Memory explores the relationship between intaglio printmaking and remembrance. Intaglio printmaking involves acid biting into the plate, etching needle carving away metal, and the plate being wiped of excess ink before being pressed onto paper. Like the loss of metal and ink from the plate, we often lose memories, personally and collectively. How we record our memories, and how those memories fade, revive, and persist over time, are at the core of this exhibition.

Stepahnie Berrie, Michael Weigman, and Haley Younce utilize various methods of intaglio printmaking to explore concepts of memory. Berrie works in etching and mezzotint with uniquely shaped plates to discuss environmental memory, specifically extinct animals and animals killed by human neglect. Weigman uses photoplate and serigraphy to discuss personal and collective histories, particularly as they relate to the crumbling remains of the US's industrial age. Younce works with photopolymer plates, drypoint and quilting to create works that explore her own familial history, and connections to Appalachia. Together, the three artists in this exhibition provide a vital exploration of the connections between memory and print.
