Students at the UK School of Music enjoy hundreds of opportunities each year to perform in solo recitals, chamber groups and our more than 30 diverse instrumental and vocal ensembles. Our ensembles have performed at prestigious venues including the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall and have enjoyed international tours to China, Italy, France, Spain and more.

Our students have performed with renowned artists including Lang Lang, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell and more. Our faculty are world renown performers practicing their craft on a global scale.

Admission to the music performance program is granted only after the successful completion of an audition in the student’s chosen instrument. Check for special audition requirements for each of the following instruments:

MASTER OF MUSIC IN PERFORMANCE (M.M.): APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. CV.  Should include:
    • Name, address, e-mail, and phone number
    • Education (institutions, degrees, dates, majors)
    • Work Experiences (locations, dates, teaching, and other professional experiences)
    • Presentations/Recitals/Publications/Clinics (include locations and dates). Include a list on a separate page, if you can, of papers you have written, whether published or unpublished.
  2. Personal Statement
    • ​Please submit a one-page statement (at least 150 words, 3 paragraphs suggested) expressing your motivation for seeking this degree from the University of Kentucky and how this degree fits into your goals for the future. 
  3. Audition and exam request form
  4. Three letters of recommendation

The GRE is not required for admission to this program.

  • The deadline for applications for international students for the fall term is February 1

DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS (D.M.A.) IN PERFORMANCE: APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. CV.  Should include:

  2. Personal Statement
    • Please submit a one-page statement (at least 150 words, 3 paragraphs suggested) expressing your motivation for seeking this degree from the University of Kentucky and how this degree fits into your goals for the future. 
  3. Writing Sample
    • At least one music paper of an analytical nature is required (two samples preferred). An undergraduate term paper is acceptable. The topic of the paper should deal with some aspect of form, harmony, or other organizational aspects of a piece of music. The paper should be at least 5 pages in length, 12-point font (Times or Times New Roman preferred), and should include bibliographical and footnote or endnote citations. We are interested in seeing your very best work.
  4. Assistantship application (optional)
    • Assistantship application is made by personal (on-campus) interview only. The interview will include a brief assessment of sight-reading, sight-singing, and keyboard skills. Interview/audition appointments are normally made during the January and February prior to fall admission.
