Influenced by revolutionary poets like Audre Lorde and Amiri Baraka, her work captures the essence of the human experience with depth and complexity. The surrealist blues poet fuses her message with live jazz accompaniment to create emotionally compelling narratives about personal exploration and social justice. Through her spoken-word performances and debut collection, she channels urgency and honesty, crafting poems that resonate universally. When the poems do what they do, they do absolutely everything.

ABOUT aja monet:
aja monet, a Surrealist Blues Poet and community organizer, hails from New York City with Cuban and Jamaican roots. She discovered her love for poetry early on, rising to prominence as a spoken-word artist during high school and winning the Nuyorican Poets Café’s Grand Slam at 19. monet's collection "My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter," notably featuring her poem #sayhername, earned widespread acclaim. She actively engages in community organizing and spoken-word performances from her base in Little Haiti, Miami. Co-founding Smoke Signals Studio, she fosters art, music, and community engagement. Additionally, she manages Voices: Poetry for the People and initiated the Maroon Poetry Festival in Miami's Liberty City. Notably, monet shared her insights at TEDWomen in 2018, alongside notable figures like Stacey Abrams and Marian Wright Edelman, expressing admiration for Black women poets like June Jordan, Audre Lorde, and Phillis Wheatley.
