Flore Laurentienne, the musical project of Canadian composer and musician Mathieu David Gagnon, draws its name from the rich flora of Quebec's Laurentian region. With intricate arrangements that blend live string ensembles, synthesizers, and organic field recordings, Gagnon crafts music that is both cinematic and contemplative. His compositions evoke a deep sense of atmosphere, inviting listeners into a serene and expansive auditory journey that resonates with the beauty and tranquility of nature.

This performance features support from Brìghde Chaimbeul: a leading purveyor of celtic experimentalism and a master of the Scottish smallpipes; a mellower cousin to the famous Highland bagpipes.

ABOUT FLORE LAURENTIENNE:
A student turned master, Mathieu David Gagnon has long been working in the shadows of several remarkable projects. At the beginning, although his college studies quickly revealed his talents in classical guitar, he did not hesitate to push his knowledge to another level. This is how, in 2010, he obtained a bachelor's degree in writing from the Faculty of Music of the Université de Montréal. However, his curious nature would only make this accomplishment an introduction to a larger academic project. In search of answers to his many questions and with the ambition of learning the art of fugue, Mathieu packed his bags for France in 2011. He would spend the next three years studying writing and orchestration, traveling between the Conservatoire d'Aubervilliers in Paris and the Conservatoire de Bordeaux. His mastery and talent would earn him honorable mentions, including the First Prize in Fugue and the Prize in Counterpoint and Harmony. At the end of this curriculum abroad, Mathieu returned home with the expertise that would finally give him the means to achieve his ambitions.

While skillfully juggling other people's projects, he secretly acted on an inspiration of his own, nourished by many hours of solitude spent exploring and giving shape to his ideas. After several months of work, Mathieu David Gagnon is finally ready to share his work,  Flore Laurentienne Vol. 1

ABOUT BRIGHDE CHAIMBEUL:

Brìghde Chaimbeul is a leading purveyor of Celtic experimentalism and a master of the Scottish smallpipes – the bellows-blown, mellower and more emotive cousin to the famous Highland bagpipes – and she’s taken them to the global stage. A native Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Skye, Brìghde roots her music in her language and culture. She rose to prominence as a prodigy of traditional music, but has since begun a journey to take the smallpipes into uncharted territory. She has devised a completely unique way of arranging for pipe music that emphasizes the rich textural drones of the instrument; the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like atmosphere, played with enticing virtuosic liquidity. She draws inspiration from the world of interconnected piping traditions, and her most recent album brings in influence from ambient, avant garde and electronic music. One can talk about Brìghde’s awards (BBC Young Folk Award; BBC Horizons Award; SAY Award nominee) and her wide array of collaborators (Caroline Polachek; Colin Stetson; Gruff Rhys; Aidan O'Rourke...) but after it all, her music speaks for itself. Haunting, entrancing, breathtaking, beautiful – this open-eared, understatedly virtuosic performer is transforming and creating new definitions for Scottish folk in the 21st century.
