This exhibition of works from the Museum’s permanent collection coincides with the Queer Art/Queer Archives Symposium co-hosted by the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville, taking place from September 20 – 21, 2024.

The artists include Berenice Abbott, Ross Bleckner, Louis Zoellar Bickett, Mike Goodlett, Keith Haring, Edward Melcarth, and Andy Warhol. Their paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs have been regularly shared with students visiting the Museum as part of art history and visual studies classes.

Queer Views is animated by rainbow flags, inquisitive glances, derogatory language, and erotic reverie—just some of the elements in complex works that explore identity, pride, and desire, and exemplify strategies of navigating socio-political marginalization.

Some wall labels in the exhibition make use of texts contributed by students under the tutelage of Miriam Kienle, Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Studies, and a co-organizer of the conference (with Jennifer Sichel, Assistant Professor of Art History and Theory, University of Louisville).
