Revue: Photographing the Art of Performance
Artists: Danny Fitzpatrick, Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova (Kurt and Kremena)
Revue brings together a series of photographs documenting live performance, with a particular focus on drag performers and street performers encountered during the Brighton Fringe Festival. The exhibition explores the many ways performers occupy space and engage with an audience through movement, costume, transformation, and presence. Rather than focusing on a single discipline or style of performance, Revue presents a range of performers and moments that demonstrate the varied ways performance can take shape in public spaces and on stage.
Photography serves as the medium through which these fleeting performances are preserved. A live performance exists within a specific moment and disappears as quickly as it begins, while photography allows those moments to be isolated, revisited, and experienced outside of their original setting. The photographs consider the relationship between performer and audience while drawing attention to the ways performance can become a form of transformation and self expression. Together, the images offer a collection of encounters with performers who use their bodies, appearances, and surroundings to create temporary worlds for an audience to enter.
