A Note from the Chair Susie Thiel

Welcome to the University of Kentucky Theatre & Dance 2026–27 season.

Theatre and Dance have the extraordinary ability to bring us together; to ask us to listen, to see the world through another person’s eyes, and to share an experience with people we may not otherwise know. At a time when so much of our lives happens behind screens and within separate communities, gathering together in a theatre to experience a story, a dance, a laugh, or a difficult question feels more important than ever.

This season reflects the remarkable range of what the performing arts can do. Antigone asks us to consider conviction, responsibility, and the consequences of standing up for what we believe. Almost, Maine finds humor and tenderness in the unexpected connections between people. American Son confronts questions of race, family, and the assumptions we bring into a room. Our Collected Stories Dance Concert reminds us that the body can communicate what words sometimes cannot. And The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical invites us into the joy, imagination, and adventure of discovering where we belong.

Each production is also a living classroom. Our students are not simply performing in these productions, they are working with our incredible faculty on designing and creating them, questioning them, collaborating across disciplines, and learning what it means to be artists and members of a community.

Thank you for joining us. Your presence matters. Every time you take a seat in our theatre, you become part of the conversation and part of the community we are building together.
We hope this season moves you, challenges you, makes you laugh, and perhaps brings you a little closer to the people sitting beside you.

Welcome to UK Theatre & Dance 26/27 Season.

A Message from the Director Christina Ritter

Sophocles’s Antigone is a gift. The over-two-thousand-year-old play reminds us that the challenges we encounter in society are human challenges, encountered afresh by every generation, in every geographic corner of the world. The play presents a dynamic, one continually fluctuating, of the tensions between authoritarian forces and individual conscience. Jean Anouilh, who wrote the adaptation we’re presenting, understood these tensions in his own time, in the 1940s in France. And we are always navigating them, on large or small scales. There are always Antigones and there are always Creons. There are always Ismenes and Haemons. And that is why this story continues to grab our attention and remind us of our shared responsibility to engage with the essential questions of what it means to create a society.

A special thank you to my husband, Wright Williams, for pointing us to the songs of Phil Ochs and Peter Seeger.

And another special thanks to John Cartwright
