It's a Grand Night for Singing

Normally, the first week of June would mark our move into the Singletary Center for our 28th annual "It's a Grand Night for Singing!" The late night rehearsals, the final costume fittings, the set build and tech calls. The excitement of the cast, crew, and patrons makes June one of our favorite times of the year. While we were not able to be together in person in 2020, we looked back, reflecting on fond memories of Grand Nights past. Visit our Facebook and Instagram or subscribe to our YouTube channel for messages from Grand Night all-stars and show clips. We will be together again soon, but, for now, let's celebrate the healing power of music and dance online.

Share your memories - whether backstage, onstage, or in the audience - using the hashtag #GrandNightatHome.

A Message from Dr. McCorvey

Each year UK Opera Theatre puts on It's a Grand Night for Singing!, a popular musical revue featuring the best from Billboard to Broadway, starring more than 100 UK Opera Theatre and the community performers. In 2017, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Grand Night and won an Emmy for the KET broadcast of the production.

In 1992, the new director of the opera program, Everett McCorvey, wanted his students to learn how to sing and dance for musical theatre, affording them expanded job opportunities. Jim Rodgers, then chair of the UK Department of Theatre, knew his students would likewise have more job opportunities if they could sing and dance. So, they created an early summer song and dance revue. The title “It’s a Grand Night for Singing,” stems from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “State Fair."
