UK Quintet with Jon Jang
Composer Jon Jang became the first American born Chinese to compose a symphonic work that honors Chinese American history. For three decades, composer and pianist Jon Jang gives a musical voice to a history that has been silent. As a pianist, Jon Jang has co-composed, co-led and recorded with Max Roach, James Newton and David Murray. As a scholar, Jang has taught at Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley and UC Irvine and has presented his work at numerous universities.
In his lecture March 28, he will discuss heterogeneity in his works that draw from Chinese folks songs, black music and European classical music.
In the performance March 29, Jon Jang will perform with the UK Quintet with UK jazz faculty and students (Paul Deatherage, Danny Cecil, Michael DeSousa and Khalil Dennis) and play some of these hybrid Chinese folks songs in a jazz context. They will also perform Charles Mingus’s epic work Meditations on Integration to commemorate its 55th anniversary.
