New Music in the Niles, with cenote and Knives of Spain
Multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Gwen Young shows two different sides of her musical personality. Her duo, cenote, with Greg Hoffman is 100% improvised, instrumental, experimental sound art using instruments like prepared guitar, fretless electric guitar, flutes, record players, noise-making analog synth boxes, etc. Her solo project, Knives of Spain, takes the singer-songwriter tradition in new directions with atmospheric soundscapes framing surrealistic lyrics.
"Fans of music that braids aspects of folk and the psychedelic avant-garde, minimalism, electronic experimentation and sonic mood painting will find things to like in knives of spain. There are subtle connections to be made with artists like the Silver Apples, Linda Perhacs, Colleen, early Pink Floyd, Can, the Latin Playboys, Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, Vashti Bunyan and Portishead."
