Faculty and Guest Artist Recital: Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano

A native of Ukraine, Oleksiy Zakharov is a freelance bassoonist in New York City. Mr. Zakharov has previously held positions of acting Associate Principal bassoon of Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as Second bassoon of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra from 2009 to 2015. Mr. Zakharov has performed as a guest principal bassoonist with American Symphony, ABT, Ensemble Signal, Columbus ProMusica, Beethoven Festival Orchestra, Albany, Princeton and Richmond Symphonies as well as Orchestra of St. Luke's. In 2017 Mr. Zakharov joined the faculty of Mahanaim School of Music and has also previously taught as guest bassoon instructor at the Oberlin Conservatory, the Advanced Bassoon Institute @ Interlochen, and has served as guest Judge for the concerto competition at Indiana University, Jacobs School of Music. While enjoying a freelance performing and teaching career in New York City, Mr. Zakharov is also a bassoon technician and specialist, and spends his free time servicing, restoring and repairing old and modern instruments for bassoonists on the East Coast. Mr. Zakharov received a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory. Mr. Zakharov also holds a Post-Graduate diploma in Orchestral Performance from Manhattan School of Music. His primary teachers include Patricia Rogers, Whitney Crockett, George Sakakeeny and Barrick Stees.

Pianist Byunghee Yoo is a visiting assistant professor of music in chamber and collaborative music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She has been invited to perform with the concertmaster of St. Louis Symphony, David Halen as well as judge for the Missouri Music Teachers Association Competitions and Texas A&M University-Kingsville Piano Competitions. Dr. Yoo came to the U.S. after receiving top honors at Kyungwon University where she received her Bachelor of Music degree, as a solo pianist, and Master of Music degree, as a collaborative pianist. She also holds her Master of Music degree in collaborative piano at the Juilliard School under the tutelage of Jonathan Feldman and Margo Garrett. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in collaborative piano at the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied with Anne Epperson. Dr. Yoo has served as a Vocal Arts Piano Fellow and staff pianist at the Juilliard School, Kaufman Music School, and McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University. From 2016-2018 she served as the coordinator of collaborative piano at Truman State University. She has been a staff pianist at Bowdoin International Music Festival since 2010.
