UK Korean Ensemble
Director: Donna Kwon Course #MUC 173-003
Normal Rehearsal Schedule: Meets TR 11- 12:15. One credit hour.
P’ungmul is a form of percussion band music and dance from Korea noted for its spirited and participatory style. Class time will focus on learning how to play the four main instruments of p’ungmul. However, because p’ungmul is a comprehensive art form, we will also integrate the learning of related movements, dance steps and songs. If interested, contact Dr. Kwon at firstname.lastname@example.org
The UK Korean Ensemble started in 2008 and consists of students and community members affiliated with UK. The UK Korean Ensemble performs regularly in the UK World Music Concert series, the ArtsAsia festival and various local community venues such as the Lexington Central Public Library. Led by Dr. Donna Kwon, the ensemble performs mainly percussion-based music on the janggo (hourglass drum), buk (barrel drum), jing (large gong) and swe (small gong). They have learned repertoire from various types of folk music, including pungmul drumming, folksongs and the more virtuosic samulnori style.
