Open Studio and Carey Ellis Show 2019

University of Kentucky School of Art and Visual Studies will bring excitement to campus again this December with the university’s most popular visual arts event, Open Studio.Open Studio, which is free and open to the public, will run from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in the Art and Visual Studies Building. 

This annual event showcases the talent of the university's students and celebrated art faculty. Studios of graduates and select undergraduates will be open with the young artists present to talk about their ongoing projects.

Visiting Artist Talk: Jesse Harrod

Jesse Harrod’s work manipulates and transforms materials to animate their sexual and sensual qualities and explore the intersections among queer kinship, support and sexuality. In their sculptural installations, they work with rope as a pliable linear element that they regard much like a drawing tool, specifically utilizing known making techniques such as macrame in ways that can be understood as simultaneously restraining and support.

Lost Souls (text: Maciej Świerkocki, illustrations: Mariusz Sołtysik) is a graphic novel that deals with the history of the Holocaust in Poland. It represents an original take on the complex story of this dark chapter in human history. The graphic novel was presented at a number of prestigious venues in Poland such as The Marek Edelman Dialogue Center in Łódź and Conrad Festival in Krakow.

Yoonmi Nam’s work considers cross-cultural experience and sense of transience through observations of everyday objects and occurrences. In her prints, drawings, sculptural works, and installations, she uses familiar disposable objects and cut flower arrangements as subject matter and explores their materiality, ephemerality, persistence, and the common and extraordinary way we structure our surroundings.

Jason Craighead's paintings are a dynamic and expressive combination of acrylic paint, oil pastel, and graphite markings on canvas. His works emits an infectious, fervent energy; where every splatter, drip, and scratch conveys the artist’s emotional and profound spirit. Craighead's work echoes the well-known words of Edward Hopper, “If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint”. 

Faculty Series: VOL III

The Bolivar Art Gallery is pleased to announce Faculty Series: VOL. III, the third annual exhibition featuring recent work of select faculty members from the UK School of Art and Visual Studies. A slight departure from the traditional "faculty show" format, the series occurs annually and represents only a portion of the faculty, with different artists exhibiting each year.
