Artist Talk: Tony Tasset

Join artist Tony Tasset and UK Art Museum Director Stuart Horodner for a discussion of Tasset’s history of making sculptures based on common American experiences – like carving pumpkins and building snowmen – and using scale and materials in surprising ways.  Tasset’s 20 foot tall work, Mood Sculpture, was selected by the Student Center Art Committee last year, and will be installed on campus in the coming week.

Chair of Department of Arts Administration and ribbon-winning baker Rachel Shane presides over the award ceremony for our pie contest, a friendly competition in association with our Off the Menu: Looking at Food exhibition. Come meet the bakers and celebrity guest judges, and, of course, have a piece of pie!

Workshop: Faking Food

Are you intrigued by Styrofoam bread and candle wax cheese? Scenic designer and educator Tamara L. Honesty leads a lively workshop based on her recent publication, The Fake Food Cookbook: Props You Can’t Eat for Theatre, Film, and TV. She discusses the step-by-step instructions for creating food that is good enough to eat but you wouldn’t want to. 

Artist Demonstration: The Bread Lecture

Portland, Oregon-based artist Daniel Duford leads a bread baking demonstration animated by talk of old gods, historical figures, and artistic rogues. Stories and bread will be consumed. Images and yeast will be passed on for further sustenance.

Lecture: On the Historic Kentucky Kitchen

Author and Interim Dean of Libraries, Deirdre Scaggs, discusses the rich, diverse heritage of Kentucky’s culinary traditions, and offers insights for today’s cooks. Drawn from recipes and rare cookbooks in the UK Libraries Special Collections, her book features classic dishes and reflections on the connections between food and memory, place, and time.
