Parker Van Houten

Parker Van Houten is a junior at the University of Kentucky majoring in Vocal Performance. He studies voice with the illustrious Dr. Angelique Clay. Parker is the Grand Prize undergraduate winner of the 2017 Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition, and frequents the stage as a member of the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre. Performance highlights include Ponchel in Silent Night, Stanley Kowalski in André Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire, and Simone in Gianni Schicchi. Parker is also a flourishing young composer, having premieres in 4 different countries over 3 continents, including his Kyrie, performed by the UK Chorale in Paris. Parker was recently elected the president of the 2019-2020 UK Men’s Chorus, and has previously served as a Student Ambassador for the College of Fine Arts. This is his third year as a member in the Creative Arts Living Learning Program and second as a peer mentor. He can’t imagine making it through freshman year without the blessing of the Creative Arts Living Learning Program. He’s honored to have had the opportunity to give back what he got out of the program, serving as a role model and sending post for students to bounce questions off of. The Creative Arts Living Learning Program puts an emphasis on developing artistry and artistic experiences through self-made connections, and helps facilitate the transition from high school to college for incoming freshman and returning students. Using Peer Mentor curated events, the program succeeded in inspiring Parker to use his art and knowledge in the role of a servant leader, and he is forever grateful to the second family he has in the LLP.
