Roger Ballen is an acclaimed American photographer who has been living and working in South Africa since the 1970s. He began his career working in a documentary mode, but over time his approach broadened to embrace aspects of fiction and the careful staging of human and animal bodies in psychologically charged spaces. He has repeatedly collaborated with individuals he met while working in rural environments, using them as a cast of characters to create hard-to-define dramas. Increasingly, he has incorporated drawing and collage into his practice, constructing and designing the elaborate sets that appear as cells and restrictive chambers. Ballen arguably uses the camera to picture the unconscious mind and unsettling states of awkwardness, fear, and displacement.

Ballen’s photographs have been exhibited at prestigious galleries and museums, and his works are in public collections at the Bibliothèque nationale and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Brooklyn Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and Tate Britain in London, to name a few. He has produced several short films including I Fink You Freeky, created for the cult band Die Antwoord in 2012. Ballen’s work has been chronicled in numerous publications, including the recent Thames & Hudson publication, Ballenesque, Roger Ballen: A Retrospective, in 2017.

Roger Ballen’s presentation in the R.C. May Photography Lecture Series is coordinated in association with UK’s School of Art & Visual Studies and the Society of Photographic Education (SPE) Midwest Conference, taking place at the Gatton Student Center from November 1 – 4, 2018.
