Graduate degrees offered at the UK School of Music
Master of Music (M.M.) and the Master of Arts (M.A.)
The M.M. and M.A. degrees enhance the study begun in the undergraduate curriculum or provide new direction for advanced or changing career interests. Specialized graduate study, leading to the M.M. degree in performance, music education, or sacred music, or the M.A. degree in music theory or musicology.
Doctor of Music Arts (D.M.A.)
The DMA is generally considered the highest degree in music performance, conducting, or composition. This degree is most appropriate for those who want to teach in the college performance studio or who want to be a conductor or composer in a college setting.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The Ph.D. is the highest music degree for those in scholarly, more academically oriented music study. Degrees in musicology, music theory and music education are offered.
The University of Kentucky is one of only a handful of universities in the South to offer the Ph.D. or the DMA.
