B.A. Art Education

Degrees Offered - BA and MA

The nationally accredited and state certified art education teacher licensure program at UK SA/VS provides a unique four-year undergraduate program in which more than 65 percent of our students graduate with a dual degree in studio art and art education.

Students in our art education program spend their first two years studying the fundamentals of studio art. Before graduation, they’ll participate in a group exhibition. The final two years in the program will be spent grounded in art education theory and practice, including a classroom teaching practicum and courses in educational pedagogy. With leading-edge educator skills, mastery of art studio techniques and knowledge in visual studies, our students are on track to becoming artist educators that engage and prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.

UK’s program in art education prepares students in the liberal arts tradition with courses that encourage creative thinking, intellectual reasoning, and exploration of humanities, culture and global dynamics. These skills fuel a passion for helping students to achieve global competitiveness in collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking.

IT’S PERSONAL

Our multidisciplinary program includes studio, general education courses, field experiences, and content specialty courses. To help students maneuver successfully through the program we offer a supportive advising environment with a highly-qualified art education faculty advisor.

SA/VS offers personalized instruction (Average class size is 12 students) in a hybrid learning environment. Our faculty have 153 combined years of teaching experience and remain engaged in creative research and artistic endeavors.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Opportunities are available for studying abroad in studio and art history courses. Student teaching abroad is also an option – recent graduates have taught in Great Britain and Italy.

Art education students are members of the Art Education Student Chapter at UK, affiliated with the Kentucky Art Education Association and the National Art Education Association. This group engages in service-learning, attends community arts events, and attends conferences, all contributing to student leadership and collaboration.

Master of Arts

SA/VS also offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Art Education, leading to a Rank I or Rank II certification depending on whether the student entered with initial certification or Rank II.  We provide in-service training, professional development, and consultation services to the schools of Fayette County and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
